Breaking Wind (Salty shoes continued)

It took some considerable time to unload our gear and get set-up. Our first day on the salt didn't start until 11:00 am because of the afore mentioned thunderstorm that had blown through Sunday night and drenched the race course and paddock. The BUB crew and their terrific group of volunteers had the place ready enough by late Monday morning that we could get set-up and through tech in good order.

The actual "technical inspection" didn't go so flawlessly for us but was really a great deal less strict than we had been led to believe. The years of combined experience that our team had along with Dan's diligence had paid off in only having "minor" issues force us to be re-inspected. It seems that they have some new interpretations of their own rules and they did foreworn us while we were waiting in line about it but it ended up only being a minor fix. Whew!

Our road racer was flying through tech when they got to the box that needed to be checked that said we had to have a chain guard...Ouch! We didn't have one with us...Along came Kevin Mahoney from Classic Motor Works! By Wednesday we had two to choose from! Dan and Johnny bolted it on in a flash!

Ready-set-WAIT!...The procedure for making a run consisted of getting in a long line, miles from the starting area and setting in the sun until exhausted. Then if you were lucky, they would release a group to proceed to the next staging area and await the starters orders to pull up to the line...You still might not be allowed to make a pass at that point, dependant on how successful the previous rider was in completing their run!

They (the organizers) were apparently short handed and was possible to lose track of a rider who might or might not have pulled off the course in the designated place...This would hold up the proceedings until the course was declared "clear". I'm very sure that an event of this magnitude is diabolically difficult to produce, but it had us (the entrants) fully exasperated and disgusted. We had a well laid plan that just couldn't be followed in a timely manner. The slow pace just plain messed us up.

The first attempt we finally made with the Bonnie Bike had the jetting backed up about three sizes and still blubbered and wouldn't pull top gear so we just assumed we were too slow to accept our speed and returned to our pit. We re-jetted again and returned to the grueling line and pretty much had the same result...After returning to our pit to prepare for the next day, we had discovered that our speed was indeed a new record for the class but was negated by going to our pit first and not checking in at tech! Gee Whiz! It seems that there had been no previous recorded record in our chosen class so whatever we did would've qualified for a return run. Nice to know these little facts!

So the next day had us re-jetted again and ready for some more speed...Again, wait, wait, wait and wait some more...From seven in the morning to four in the afternoon and we only got two official recorded runs in but we did have the record! We had made still another jetting change and were on the starting line when Cliff Gullett had his tragic accident and that ended the event for the day.

I won't go into any detail here about Cliff's wreck, but you can understand the pall that came over the place and of course, the event was suspended for the rest of the day.

The next day, Thursday, was pretty breezy and that kept the streamliners from controling the pace of the runs but we had some trouble to deal with. We had begun to make the change-over to Nitrous and our electrical systems didnt function properly...Dan and Ron swung into action and found a duff battery! Well with all of our preparation and detailed lists, there was no new/spare battery in our trailer! Johnny and Mark made a quick trip into town and found the only battery in town that would fit our mount and it was quickly bound into place. With all the systems working, we buttoned up the bike headed for the long line at pre-staging...

Well mother nature can be a real bitch at times and the wind had picked up considerably to say the least! This ended the event early and put us back in our pit battening down the hatches for the night.

One more day of fun left to play on the salt...

More to follow...

Phil.
