The Royal
Enfield Bullet seems an underdog in the midst of the legendary
Norton and Matchless competition specials, yet I have always
believed that the race does not belong to the swiftest, but to
those that keep on running. After five decades, the Royal
Enfield Bullets keep on running!
All this competition has taught us a lot about the Bullet
- its strengths, its weaknesses, and what it takes to keep it
running at its best. That knowledge goes into every product we
sell and every single word of advice we give.
As team owner, I am indebted to the commitment of all of
the people that pushed the development of the bike beyond what
most sane people thought was possible and got it to finish line
race after race. Our sponsor Classic Motors, our courageous
rider Johnny Szoldrak, our superb engine builder Glen Kyle and
master tuner, Phil Myers. A special thanks to my family, that
saw to it that the business end never missed a beat through the
whole season. But most of all, thanks to our customers, fans and
classic bike enthusiast for advice, encouragement and support.
Thank You. -

We are having a
rather good season, with wins at several tracks and a
small following of Enfield enthusiasts showing up all
across the nation to see us run. It should be said that
part of our success is from the lack of participation
from most of the "fast guys" on those astounding Manx
Nortons and G50 Matchless bikes, but there is no denying
the fact that you must show up at each event and finish
to win championships.
I think it
would be appropriate to tell you a little about Dan
Holmes, the bike's owner and team founder. Dan's
background is in flat track racing in the mid to late
'70s. That is where his heart is, but his health does
not permit him to race any more. Rider Johnny Szoldrak
lives nearby in Warsaw, Ind., with loads of roadracing
experience and desire.
In late
summer 2001 we teamed up and built a Classic '60s class
racer using a "new" 1996 Indian-manufactured Enfield.
Dan owns an Enfield dealership,
DRS Cycle,
here in Goshen, Ind., and is the nation's number-one
dealer and parts outlet for the marque. He also strongly
supports his customers with many, many hours on the
phone, educating and assisting each person who asks. His
quality personal relationships with people from all over
the world centering around Enfields is second to none. I
am his close friend and I keep the Bullet racer prepped
and running at the races. He calls me his "tuner," but
really I am just an old racing mechanic/machinist who
thoroughly enjoys participating. |
